About Me

I was named after my uncle, 1st Lt. William J. Leonard. He flew the P-51 Mustang with the 55th Figther Group, 338th FS and had 310 actual combat hours. A picture of him after a mission on 11 Sept. 1944 is in the book by John M. Gray " 55th FG versus the Luftwaffe"

Wings of Freedom, a group that tours the U.S. has a P-51 that is really something to see. If the opportunity has it, do attend a weekend tour visit. Those P-51 Mustangs were hot little things, fast, and the pilots surely had to be the young adventurous gutsy guys back then.

The 55th FG had a few "Claims to Fame". They were the first 8th Air Force aircraft over Berlin- 3 March 1944. They destroyed more locomotives by strafing than any other group. Also destroyed 316 enemy aircraft in the air and 268 on the ground. They also had a total of 19 Aces with 95 victories.
