About Me

I'M THE ONLY CHILD OF WAR HERO LT. JAMES GILBRIDE . (SANDRA K. GILBRIDE OLSON LOCKETT-- BORN 6 WEEKS AFTER THE JAMES'S DEATH )

LT' GILBRIDE WAS A FIGHTER PILOT FLYING OUT OF NUTHAMPSTEAD IN THE 1ST P-38 DELIVERED TO NUTHAMPSTEAD IN 1943. HE FLEW THE "VIVACIOUS VERA", NAMED AFTER MY MOTHER AND HIS WIFE.

HIS PLANE WAS SHOT DOWN ON A MISSION ESCORTING ALLIED BOMBERS TO AND FROM BREMEN, GERMANY

HE DIED & WAS INITIALLY BURIED IN KOEKAGAN, NETHERLANDS ON NOVEMBER 29, 1943. HE RECEIVED MULTIPLE DECORATIONS FOR HIS VALIENT EFFORTS TO PROTECT OTHER DISABLED PLANES.

MY EXTENSIVE FAMILY -- HUSBAND, MY 5 CHILDREN AND 9 GRANDCHILDREN ARE ALL EXTREMELY PROUD OF HIS SACRIFICE.

WE JUST RECENTLY HAD THE GREAT PLEASURE (*AND SORROW) OF FOLLOWING THE PATH HE TRAVELED IN HIS WAR EXPERIENCE.-- EASTERN ENGLAND AND THE NETHERLANDS.

WE ARE GREATLY IN DEBT TO RUSSELL ABBEL IN NUTHAMPSTEAD AND JAN MEMMINK LOCATED CLOSE TO KOEKANGE, NETHERLANDS-- BOTH OF WHICH HAVE RESEARCHED AND EXPERTLY CHRONICILED THE ALLIED AIR WAR IN THEIR RESPECTIVE AREAS AND PERSONALLY SHARED EXTENSIVELY WITH US.

WE NOT ONLY VISITED THE ENGLISH AIRFIELD & AND THE CRASH SITE AND THE LOCAL CEMETERY WHERE HE WAS INITIALLY BURIED-- BUT HAD THE EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITY THAT TO MEET THE LADY IN KOPEKANGE WHO WAS THE ONE WHO SAW THE PLANE CRASH AND WAS FIRST TO DISCOVER THE BODY (SHE WAS 10 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME-- AND STILL LIVES IN THE SAME FARMHOUSE).

THANK GOD AND ALL OF THOSE WHO KEEP THE INCREDIBLE STORY OF WWII ALIVE.
